Al Ain Zoo celebrates African month

ABU DHABI – Crowds cheered as performers danced to rhythmic percussion at Al Ain Zoo in celebration of African Month on March 22.

Zoo-goers were treated to a show that comprised African drumming and singing, as well as ethnic dances featuring acrobatic feats. At the conclusion of the show, performers asked audience members to join in as they sang the chorus to Shakira’s Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).

In addition to traditional dances, the zoo’s month-long festivities featured African cuisine, including authentic dishes from Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania and Ethiopia at the Zarafa Café. Works of various African artists were also available for sale at the zoo’s retail shop.

“African wildlife has long been a part of Al Ain Zoo’s history, and we are excited to offer our guests a complete African experience by paying tribute to the culture of the lands these animals hail from,” said Al Ain Zoo Operations Manager Fatima Al Zaabi, in a statement released at the commencement of festivities on March 1.

Visitors could also view the “African Mixed” exhibit, which showcased wildlife in a 15-hectare enclosure.
